podiatrist

A podiatrist, or Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM), is a professional who is trained in the treatment of injuries or issues concerning a person's feet, or areas of the lower leg. When it comes to treatments, podiatrists have the ability to reset broken bones, prescribe drugs, request lab tests or x-rays, as well as perform surgery.

To become a podiatrist, one must complete 4 years of medical school, as well as 3 years of a residency where they gain real world experience working at a hospital. After those two requirements are completed, some choose to gain further certifications by the American Board of Podiatric Medicine (ABPM) in areas such as surgery of the foot.

A podiatrist may be of help to you if you are experiencing pain or discomfort due to conditions such as hammertoes, bunions, arthritis, heel pain, ingrown toenails, corns, calluses, fungal nails, flat feet, plantar warts, or athlete’s foot, to name a few. They can also be useful if you are curious about maintaining general care for your feet, picking the correct shoe size, obtaining footwear inserts or orthotics, as well as suggesting stretches or exercises to help strengthen your feet.

If you’re experiencing any problems involving your feet, or lower leg areas, it is highly recommended that you consult with a podiatrist near you for a proper diagnosis and treatment regime.

Summary: Final Rule Implementing Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued the Final Rule implementing the prohibition of discrimination under Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2010. The Final Rule, Nondiscrimination in Health Programs and Activities, will help to advance equity and reduce health disparities by protecting some of the populations that have been most vulnerable to discrimination in the health care context. The final rule explains consumers’ rights under the law and provides covered entities important guidance about their obligations.

Section 1557 prohibits discrimination based on race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability in certain health programs and activities.

Section 1557 builds on long-standing and familiar Federal civil rights laws: Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VI), Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (Title IX), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504), and the Age Discrimination Act of 1975 (Age Act). Most notably, Section 1557 is the first Federal civil rights law to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex in all health programs and activities receiving Federal financial assistance.

Section 1557 has been in effect since enactment of the ACA in 2010 and the HHS Office for Civil Rights (OCR) has been enforcing the provision since it was enacted.

Coverage of the Rule

The rule covers:

− Any health program or activity, any part of which receives funding from HHS (such as hospitals that accept Medicare or doctors who accept Medicaid);

− Any health program that HHS itself administers;

− Health Insurance Marketplaces and issuers that participate in those Marketplaces.

Medical History

Because systemic conditions frequently manifest themselves in the feet, we need to know the state of your general health as well as your foot condition.

Examination

A comprehensive foot examination will be made. While many foot conditions are mechanical in origin, a careful examination will help determine the cause of the problem.

X-Rays

The podiatrists may take X-Rays to aid in a diagnosis. Many conditions of the foot are due to bony pathology which can be determined though x-rays. The diagnosis and treatment of foot fractures are aided by x-rays that can show the extent of the fracture.

Lab Tests

Blood tests and cultures may be needed to diagnose specific problems. Also, testing of any tissues removed is available. MRI's CAT scans or Vascular Testing may be prescribed at Southeast Podiatry to enhance the diagnostic process.

Medications

The podiatrists may find it necessary to prescribe oral, injectable or topically applied medications in the treatment of your condition. Your medical history will be important in determining the best medicine for your treatment.

Orthoses

Corrective devices of several types are indicated in treatment of a wide variety of medical problems. The doctors at Southeast Podiatry are skilled in fitting orthosis to relieve many foot conditions.

Surgery

Many painful conditions of the foot are correctable by surgery. If your condition requires surgery, the doctors at Southeast Podiatry will fully discuss and explain the procedure to you and answer any questions you have. Our goal is to insure you know your options and the expected outcome.
